TFx: Where did you come up with the idea for this book, and what can you tell us about the plot?
Hystad:
The Bridge Sequence was a merging of two ideas. I love the mysterious objects coming from deep space, and the conflict and tension that creates. And I also enjoy the adventure, searching for lost artifact type stories. Lost Contact and the subsequent books take this and run with the concepts at
full speed. We have our hero, Rex Walker and his sidekick, teaming up with unlikely allies to find his
long-lost father. And they have to save the world along the way.
TFx: How did you choose the setting(s)?
Hystad: I haven’t been to Boston, but I’ve always wanted to go there. It seemed like the good starting point for the hero, since he’s a college professor. From there we travel to Australia, Antarctica, LA, Japan, France, Venezuela, and all over the place. It was exciting to use real world settings for the backdrop of the adventure.
TFx: Where do you draw inspiration from when writing your characters?
Hystad: A lot of my books are written in first person, including this series. I love how close you get to the story, and I find that readers engage with the character, if done well. Rexford Walker is a lot smarter than me, which makes it a challenge, but you just have to pull from your experiences, and do a lot of research to make it work. For my side characters, I utilize pieces of people I know, characters from TV shows, and personalities I think would balance the plot out with. In Lost Contact, we have a billionaire alien obsessed man, an ex-Navy Seal, and a pilot catering to the rich socialite types. They were all a lot of fun to write about.
TFx: What are you reading now, and what good books have you read lately?
Hystad: I’m currently reading the ninth Jack Reacher novel. I can’t get enough of those books. I recently finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (great book), and have Survive the Night by Riley Sager, and 2nd Chance by James Patterson in my queue.
TFx: What are you working on now?
Hystad: I primarily write in the science fiction genre, though a lot of them lean toward thrillers. I’m working on a brand new series called the River Saga, and it’s probably going to be out early 2022. I also have started a crime thriller series, my first foray into a series without any aliens…
